In this episode of the Disaster Podcast, frequent guest Dr. Joe Holley joins our hosts Sam Bradley and Jamie Davis, the Podmedic to talk about the challenges of dealing with crush injuries. These are typically injuries suffered when someone is trapped for a long period of time in a position with heavy objects on their extremities.
Joe points out to Jamie that it’s a more common injury than a responder might think. Anyone who is put in a position where they can’t move for a long period of time can suffer the effects of a crush injury. Think of an elderly person who falls and remains on the floor in the same position for a long period of time before they’re found. Their own body weight becomes the crushing object that causes a crush syndrome type of injury.
