Ebola Hysteria and Disaster Medicine Preparedness

ebola virusOn this episode of the disaster podcast host Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and guest Dr. Joe Holley invite Lieutenant Jim Strickland from Memphis Fire Department on the show. Jim is the infection control officer for that department and was fresh off a call with the federal government where officials from CDC, Homeland Security and HHS were on, along with the President, to talk about the appropriate response to the Ebola cases in the U.S.

Hysteria surrounding the Ebola outbreak in Africa has spread to the U.S. where there are still just a few isolated cases all from known sources of infection. The news media is propagating the story and maintaining public concern for a disease that is largely contained and managed at this time. Check out Jim’s input on what we in EMS and disaster response should be doing if we’re concerned about how to protect ourselves from a potential Ebola patient.
