Disaster, Fires, and Stormy Weather Ahead

Tropical Stormy Weather AheadOur disaster weather experts, Kyle Nelson and Becky Depodwin, come on this episode of the Disaster Podcast to review some of last week’s weather events and look foward to the coming week in weather. Last week’s Derecho weather event that struck the upper midwest is still under investigation by the National Weather Service. Evidence seems to point at even higher wind strength than originally predicted. This may explain the extensive infrastructure damage sustained in places like Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana.

Then we move forward where Kyle and Becky talk about wild-fires and the unique weather phenomena created by these massive blazes. Kyle explains in detail how one California wildfire created a fire storm tornado warning last week.

The team also looks forward as tropical disturbances track forward in the Atlantic basin. At the time of recording, two tropical depressions had formed and threatened to track towards inhabited areas, including the western Caribbean, the eastern Caribbean, the Yucatan Peninsula, and the southern and Gulf states in the United States. The team ponders what would happen if two tropical storms converge on each other and we all learn about the Fujiwhara Effect.

Also on the show were co-hosts Sam Bradley, and Jamie Davis, and Dr. Joe Holley.
