Disaster Response Careers Questions Answered, Part 2

Disaster Response CareersIn this episode of the Disaster Podcast we bring back listener LN (pronounced “ellen”) with part two of her series of questions sent in to the team here at the podcast. LN asked about how she could find a job in the disaster response space and what training she might need to find that job.

Hosts Jamie Davis, the Podmedic, and Sam Bradley were joined by regular guest Dr. Joe Holley to talk about these questions with LN and to answer any other questions she might have, too. This turned into a great episode and stretched into two parts.

LN has her own podcast and site where she talks about being a nomad of sorts and discusses things like packing light, traveling the world, and her experiences living in different places with light resources.

I am coming back around to follow-up on this episode; been busy with work and finishing my EMT-Basic class, I have my state test on 5/19 and already have passed my practicals :-).

One thing I like that somebody said was that all disasters are local. Like Jaime said, I would suggest anyone that is interested in getting experience to find a local volunteer fire department as they are always the first responders to any disaster. Local volunteer fire departments are always needing assistance and manpower. Also, many rural EMAs need assistance with various emergency mgmt, I am starting now also with my LEPC and EMA both in a planning & logistics capacity as well.

Team Rubicon, I am a TR member but have not been able to deploy yet. Yes, they military experienced folks as the core but they also integrate first responders as well. They actually have many more domestic responses and currently are in Houston in response to the flooding. They are part of the local VOADs and National VOAD group so they can deploy domestically as they are needed. I will pass along the podcast info to TR guys to get them on the podcast.

Again love the podcast and keep it up.
