A few weeks ago a weather event called a Bomb-Cyclone struck the US midwest from Colorado through the central plains states. A bomb-cyclone or bombogenesis is the rapid deepening of an extratropical cyclonic low-pressure area. The change in pressure needed to classify something as explosive cyclogenesis is latitude dependent. This particular event caused severe blizzard conditions in Colorado, stranding thousands on the roads there for hours. In the midwest, it turned into a severe rain event where it caused record flooding in the Missouri and Mississippi river valleys.
