Teal Brooks (@base_medical on Twitter) is our special guest on this week’s episode. She has a varied medical background starting with ski patrol, mountain rescue, pre-hospital paramedic, and eventually wilderness medical training entrepreneur in Europe. We talk with Teal about her background and explore the things she’s doing to teach wilderness medicine in other countries where systems of care are set up differently from what we are used to in the United States.

She starts by describing the key differences between what typical urban prehospital providers and wilderness providers see and deal with in their patients. Teal acknowledges that some healthcare professionals are not always prepared for the unique challenges seen in the wilderness setting. It takes a special mindset to adjust to wilderness medicine.

Kyle shares how his ski patrol experiences and training is akin to some of the methods and skills used by wilderness providers even though a ski resort is not a true back-country setting. Jamie shares his belief that remote settings with wilderness attributes can be found closer to many urban centers than you might think, such as when your patient is trapped in a setting were extrication is not easily available and the provider on scene must manage the patient for an extended time.

Teal spends some time talking about her business Base Medical. She describes its mission and shares the ways she has adapted her skills to running a business providing wilderness care education.
